shiroiyuuki:

She was startled at the sudden noise and nearly jumped out of her skin when someone landed on the ground right in front of her.

She could hear her heart thudding in her ears as she looked at the flowing orange hair and her fingers clenched around the hairpins she had just found. She found it extremely difficult to focus on what was going on because her legs wanted her to start running again. Still on edge from the meeting with Kaname, she almost turned around when the girl in front of her got to her feet.

Her smiled soothed Yuki and her voice continued to set her at ease as she slowly felt her body relax and focused on what the girl in front of her was saying.

Before she knew it, she was smiling gently herself as she responded with the hairpins held out in her open palm, “Would these be the hairpins you were looking for?”

She gasped when she saw the girl hold out her hand, revealing the precious object she had been searching for all day long - her beloved hairpins! Orihime’s eyes sparkled like stars in her face from pure unadulterated happiness. Beaming from ear to ear, she stammered out a quick,  “Yes! T-Thank you very much!” before taking them from her gratefully. Pulling back her bangs, Orihime was relieved to clip them securely into place once again, her fingers tenderly touching the six-pointed flowers nestled in her coppery-colored hair.

Realizing what she had just done, Orihime paused, blushed out of embarrassment, and smiled bashfully. She hoped she hadn’t offended her by just snatching up the pins from her hands like that. Her jubilation at being unexpectedly reunited with them just overwhelmed her so much she could not hold herself back. Still, Orihime inwardly chided; that isn’t a way to treat the person who was so kind enough to return them to you! What would onii-chan say? “Manners, ‘Hime,” the sweet, wise voice of her brother murmured at the back of her head, prompting her to amend her error.

She laughed and lightly hit the top of her head. “Ah - I’m sorry about just taking them in such a rude manner … ” She blinked then, her lips thinning when she realized she did not know her name. She internally sweat-dropped. How doubly rude of her not to ask, or introduce herself before, either!

“By the way, my name is I’m Inoue Orihime! May I … please ask what yours is? I think I should know so that I can thank the person who helped me more properly, eheh.”

shiroiyuuki:

It had been only a few moments ago that she felt like running away and hiding from the world. He reminded her of all the things that she didn’t want to think about. His presence terrified her and he was the reason she had left Cross Academy. She’d been so harrowed by the conversation that her feet had started moving on their own, taking her out into the gardens of Astrea Academy without a destination.

In the setting sun a sudden flash of light had her shielding her eyes. Abruptly she realized she didn’t know where she was. Looking around she tried to see where she was in the quickly darkening walls of plants around her when there was another flash of light. This time she decided to look for the source of the light. It might help her find her way back. Stumbling she almost fell to her knees as the light flashed brighter. A few feet away from her she finally saw the source of the light sitting calmly on the edge of a fountain. ‘It must’ve been the angle the sun was hitting it,’ she thought as she picked up the bejeweled hairclips.

It was simply the outcome of a stumble, a loss of balance, a clumsy mistake.

She squeaked.

And she went down awfully, awfully hard.

Orihime ended up landing on her backside, limbs sprawled out, and large, hazel orbs staring up into -

She went red, comprehension dawning, as she looked up, up, up into mocha brown eyes; they of course, belonged to a young teenaged girl, donning the same school uniform as her and standing near the edge of a stone fountain. All Orihime could do was continue craning her neck as she peered up, mouth agape - then, finally as if struck by a bolt of lightning, she jumped up, though not without embarrassment.

As soon as Orihime was standing on her own two feet, she started running her hands down her dress, smoothing it down whilst picking it free of twigs, leaves and dusting off any smudges of dirt. Afterwards, she ran her hand through her hair, trying to tame the long, coppery strands while studiously avoiding meeting the gaze of the girl who was standing there. Once she was finished making herself look presentable, she whirled around, raised a hand to scratch at the back of her head and chirped apologetically, “Um, ah - sorry for that!”

Raising her head, she flashed a shy but earnest smile. “I was just…Ah, you see, I-I was looking for something of mine that I lost earlier in the day! I was not in the maze too long ago, so I thought … maybe they’d be here.” Going on, she inquired, voice going soft but ringing with hope, “You would not have happened to seen two hairpins, have you? They’re light blue, with flowers on them. Really small, but when the sunlight hits them they sparkle and shine! So I was hoping they’d be easy to find … but so far I have not had any luck. T-They’re truly important to me …”

Orihime trailed off, trying not to let her fear of losing them show too obviously. Rapidly, she blinked, trying to keep the tears at bay that wanted to pool and gather, and slip down her cheeks.

At first, Orihime did not panic. When she reached up to delicately touch the blue hairpins in her hair out of habit, and found they were not there, she blinked slowly, checked again, and then giggled girlishly. It would not be the first time she misplaced or accidentally lost something of hers after all, as Orihime was very prone to forgetfulness. I’m sure I’ll stumble upon them eventually! she’d reassured herself, nodding brightly, and carrying on with the rest of her school day.

The auburn-haired girl even allowed herself to fantasize in class, staring outside the window with a dreamy expression upon her facial features. Cupping the sides of her face with both hands, she murmured airily to herself, “Maybe, maybe, it’ll happen just in the Disney movie Cinderella. They’ll be brought to me, and right after I put them in my hair, they’ll sparkle brightly! And then, the charming, dashing prince will come for me and sweep me off my feet~!”

Cheerfully, Orihime had retraced her steps to the best of her abilities.

But by the time the bell rang, signalling the end of the school day, she could not contain the negative emotions churning inside her heart. She tried to hide her steadily growing panic and anxiety, but it was unavoidable - she really did not know where her hairpins were, and her fantasy had been popped like a balloon.

There was one place left to look. The garden’s maze, which was known by the student body for its supposedly creepy reputation. Orihime herself found the place to be tranquil and exceptionally beautiful. Biting her lip, she entered, hoping that she would find what she had come looking for. If Orihime didn’t find her hairpins, then … just the very notion made tears spring to her eyes, which she tried to wipe away with the sleeve of her blouse.

Orihime’s hair flowed behind her as she walked, and her bangs fell freely into her eyes. Against the backdrop of colorful flowers and green hedges, flowing, auburn locks looked out of place. The way her long bangs fell freely into her slightly misty only served to remind her how strange it was to go without wearing them. For a short period of time, she even had - but as soon as Orihime moved out of Karakura Town, she’d resumed using the pins to clip her bangs to the side. Perhaps, it was a defense mechanism of sorts. Leaving behind her hometown to start anew had thrust her into foreign territory with no friends to accompany her.

That and the hairpins in question were Orihime’s only connection to her old life back in Karakura Town, her six precious nakamas, and her onii-chan. If Orihime did not find them, she truly did not know what she would do.
